Furthering Education for Local Healthcare Providers

October 7, 2020

As we navigate a world impacted by COVID-19, increasing access to vital resources is even more important. Community based medical providers in Northern Manhattan contend against health disparities exacerbated by COVID-19 to provide the best patient care. Columbia University Irving Medical Center (CUIMC) and NewYork-Presbyterian Hospital (NYP) launched the Community Physicians Educational Webinar series earlier this Fall in collaboration with the Dominican Medical Association.

This series is not only part of the commitment of CUIMC and NYP to work together with community, but it is also part of a wider collaborative effort to improve overall health outcomes in northern Manhattan.

Under the leadership of Mara Minguez, MD, MSc, Assistant Chief Medical Officer for Community Affairs at NewYork- Presbyterian Hospital and Rafael Lantigua, MD, Associate Dean for Community Service at Columbia University Irving Medical Center, the series offers several robust lectures formulated in collaboration with leadership from the Dominican Medical Association and facilitated by health professionals from CUIMC and NYP.

Presented in a format for practical application, the webinars cover how to meet ongoing health related needs to prepare for the next wave of the COVID-19 pandemic. A total of six webinars are scheduled to cover vital information for those providers on the ground. In addition, participating medical providers, may also earn Continuing Medical Education credits to shore their current knowledge base.

Offering a webinar series is one aspect of the overall mission to strengthen neighborhood ties. As Dr. Minguez mentioned, “our community providers are invested in the health of the patients they serve, and collaboration to achieve best health outcomes to move the needle in population health is an imperative process. We are excited to work alongside our community providers as we continue to learn best practices in the midst of this pandemic

The next webinar is scheduled for Sunday, October 11, 2020 from 8:00 – 9:15 pm. The topic is “COVID-19: The Bigger Picture” and features a presentation from Ariel Pablos-Méndez, MD, PhD, Professor of Medicine, Columbia University Irving Medical Center, and Attending Physician at NewYork-Presbyterian.
