Local students awarded with Stanley E. Michels Health Careers Scholarship

On Monday, July 30, the Office of Government & Community Affairs honored 18 recipients of the Stanley E. Michels Health Careers Scholarship. The scholarship was established in 1995 with seed funding from Columbia University to increase the number of low-income residents of Upper Manhattan entering the medical field.  The scholarship program supports students who are enrolled in a variety of health sciences programs at CUNY, including but not limited to the medical laboratory, radiological technology, dental hygiene, speech pathology, and occupational and physical therapy programs.  The program assures students who demonstrate financial need and are residents of Community Districts 9 and 12 obtain stipends to enable the completion of their internship requirement.  Commencing in 2011, Columbia University committed $1 million over a 10-year period to expand the CUNY-Columbia University Health Sciences Program.
